MAKING BIOCHAR: with Peter Hirst of New England Biochar

Peter Hirst explains, "Now, the old fashioned way of doing this, which is to build a big mound and cover it with mud or clay, and to restrict the air flow as to make it burn very slow and at a low temperature. Just about the worst kind of pollution there is, a lot of long-chain hydrocarbons, tars, ash, carbon soot, it is really a nasty way to make charcoal. When we do it this way where we separate the fire from the char feed stock we get a clean hot flame, which reduces all of the volaties to al little bit of carbon dioxide and a lot of water vapor.".

Watch as the harmful waste water turns into a positive source to go back into the river. Most of the byproducts can be later used as organic fertilizer if treated accordingly.
